[about]
a small tool, made with care
CaptionSmith adds animated captions to short videos without sending your video anywhere.
why it exists
Most caption tools upload your video to a server, charge a monthly fee, and keep a copy of your work. For a 30 second clip, that felt like too much. Computers and browsers are now fast enough to do the whole job locally: listen to the speech, write out every word with its timing, draw the captions and save the finished video.
So that is what this does. You open a web page, drop in a video, and everything happens on your own computer.
what it does well
- Word by word captions for Reels, Shorts and TikToks, in styles made for short videos.
- Private by design: no uploads, no account, nothing stored on a server.
- A transcript you can fix by clicking a word.
- English, Hindi (Beta) and a dozen other languages.
what it does not do (yet)
- It is not a full video editor. It adds captions and exports.
- Hindi and other non English languages can need more fixing by hand.
- It works best in desktop Chrome and Edge. Safari and Firefox are not fully tested.
